About BeInTheKnowRI.com

The substance abuse prevention task forces in Narragansett, South Kingston, and Chariho have collaborated to launch a new campaign called Be In The Know (Kids Need Our Wisdom). Our objective is to arm families in our communities within Rhode Island with the tools to help teens make good decisions that will lead them to a promising future. Research tells us that parents are the single most important reason why teens DON'T use alcohol or drugs.

Be Strong

We know that parenting teens can be frustrating and exhausting but when parents set and enforce clear "no use" rules and are a positive example themselves, their teens are more likely to decide not to experiment.

Don't Back Off!

Just because your children are getting older, it doesn't mean that parenting should diminish. Research shows that parents who are actively involved with their children's lives, really listen to their concerns and set well-defined limits are more likely to raise children who don't abuse alcohol or use drugs.

Get The Facts

Early teen alcohol and drug use is linked to: increased sexual behavior, impaired emotional development and lack of coping skills and increased risk of injury and death. Get educated and learn Rhode Island laws.

"As a parent or caregiver, you play a vital role in influencing your child's attitudes and behaviors. You serve as a role model on the use of alcohol, control the availability of alcohol in your home, and help set your child's expectations concerning drinking behaviors. A recent study shows that children whose parents are involved in their lives - hold regular conversations, attend after-school events, and listen to their problems - are less likely to drink or smoke."
