Chariho Tri-Town
Task Force Awarded a $500,000.00 Federal Grant

The Chariho Tri-Town Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention was awarded a Federal Drug Free Community Grant. The Grant, in the sum of $500,000.00 is to be paid out over the next 5 years.

The Chariho Tri-Town Task Force is a coalition of community members that was established in 1988 with the creation of the Rhode Island Substance Abuse Prevention Act. Legislators, Clergy, Media, Law enforcement, Treatment, School, Youth and Prevention Specialists work together to create safe and healthy communities in Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton.

The Chariho Tri-Town Task Force has always had a strong presence in the regional Middle and High Schools in Chariho, as it employs Student Assistance Counselors there to work with students and their families. This new federal grant will allow for more prevention work to be done in the communities.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Establish and strengthen collaboration among Chariho's private non-profit agencies, and Federal, State, Local and Tribal governments to support the efforts of the coalition to prevent and reduce substance use among youth.
  • Reduce substance abuse among our youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase that risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.

To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:

  • Enhance diversity in our collation to better meet community needs.
  • Develop, implement and enforce local ordinances in all three towns.
  • Establish a media campaign to change social norms toward underage drinking.
  • Create substance abuse prevention outreach programs in our faith communities and Parent Support Network.

For more information on the Task Force and its programs, email the DFC Grant Manager or email the Chariho Tri-Town Task Force Coordinator.
