Rhode Island Substance Abuse Penalties

Alcohol Use and Possession

Penalties for underage drinking, did you know...

  • It is against Rhode Island law to serve or purchase alcohol for anyone under the age of 21?
  • If you do purchase alcohol for an individual under the age of 21, you could be jailed up to 6 months, fined between $350 to $1000, and be charged with a felony?
  • That if any person under the age of 21 that is not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian is caught trying to transport alcohol either opened or unopened, they can have their license suspended?
  • That if an individual under the age of 21 is caught purchasing, or in possession of alcohol, they are subject to a fine of $150 to $750, community service, and shall be subject to license suspension?
